Appreciation Of Stapler Design in Different Ages

Feb 28, 2023

Stapler is a very common stationery. There is at least one stapler in every office. It provides an ideal way for filing and saving paper data for daily work. Do you know when the stapler was invented? Who invented the stapler? What was the earliest stapler? What's more, are there any new changes in staplers? Let's take take a look at the stapler.

The history of staplers

According to the most popular statement on the Internet, the first person to use the stapler was Louis XV of France. The staples he used were carefully made by hand, with the royal logo printed on them for binding the royal documents together.

The modern paper binding tool appeared on September 30, 1841. The inventor was Samuel Tory. This original tool mainly used pins to penetrate and fasten the paper.

After that, the stapler has undergone earth-shaking changes:

1850s-Eyelet Machine

This bookbinding device patented by Hymen L. Lipman in 1854 is "a small hole binding machine". When using these machines, it is very inconvenient to reverse the paper and easy to form dislocation. The following figure shows an improved model in 1880.

1860s - Copper Stapler

George W. McGill obtained a patent in the United States in 1866. In 1867, McGill's patent set two functions of cutting paper and binding. The binding accessories used are brass. There are two styles according to the quantity of paper to be bound.

1870s - Single Preformed Staples

The first desktop computer that fixed paper by inserting and locking metal nails was patented in 1877 (U.S. Patent No. 195603). Similarly, only one metal nail can be pre-installed at a time, and it needs to be refilled after use. This machine is also from Mr. McGill above.

1870s - Preformed Staples Pre-assembly Bin

In 1878, the first binding machine with a pre-loading bin was patented. The pre-loading bin can accommodate pre-formed staples automatically sent to the stapler drive mechanism.

1980s-Staples Formed by Spool

In 1880, a desktop binding machine was patented, which formed staples from the bobbin mounted on the bobbin. This is the Eveready stapler patented in 1915.

In this period, due to the frequent need for a large number of fast binding documents, the design of staplers began to pursue small and automatic functional features. This change in use demand is also the driving force for the development of staplers.

1890s - Cut Staples from the Strip

The stapler named Star Paper Fastener was invented by EH Hotchkiss Co. in 1895. Even after 60 years of change, the stapler still sold well in the 1950s. This stapler can move along the paper binding wire and cut a single stapler from the connected metal stamping strip, which can meet the demand of continuous binding.

1890s - Staples Formed by Straight Nails

A stapler formed by a straight nail. This stapler forms a stapler by cutting a piece of iron wire, and fixes the paper by bending the cut wire. This stapler was patented in 1987.

1900s - Needleless Stapler

The earliest needleless stapler appeared in 1909. It was invented by Clipless Paper Fastener Co. The so-called needleless stapler refers to fixing the paper by stacking the paper together and forming wavy creases on the paper with a punch without the help of metal wire.

1920s-Pin Stapler

During this period, a binding machine was introduced by inserting a binding pin; In 1926, Pinzit Company in New York introduced a machine called Pinzit, which first bends the paper so that the pin moving in a straight line can pass through the paper from the top and then through the paper from the bottom.

Handheld Stapler

Compared with the bulky staplers described above, the emergence of this hand-held stapler has made the design of staplers more compact and portable.

This stapler is mainly used for binding legal documents, brochures, briefs, magazines, etc., because these documents are not too thick.
