Precautions for the use of ballpoint pens

Mar 19, 2022

1. The angle is too small

The end of the ball seat is easy to wear (the material of the ball seat is nickel-platinum copper or stainless steel, which is much easier to wear than the ball). Doing so will cause the balls to fall off.

2. Correct angle

When writing a ballpoint pen, it is ideal to control the angle between 55° and 70°. At this time, only the ball is in contact with the paper (the ball is very hard, tungsten carbide or ceramic, and it is not easy to wear), and the closing part does not contact the writing material. So as to ensure that the ballpoint pen can prolong the service life in a good writing state.

3. The pad is too thick

When writing, the pad paper is too thick, and the end of the pen touches the paper, which is easy to wear and tear off the beads. It is recommended: 0.4 balls cannot be copied; 0.5 balls can be copied at most 1 sheet, not more; 0.7 balls can be copied at most 3 sheets Up to 4 sheets, no more, and it is best to write at 75° when copying.

4. Dyes

The function of the dye is to give the ink sufficient color depth. The dyes used in the ballpoint pen ink can be divided into oil-soluble dyes and alcohol-soluble dyes. The dyes used in this test are phthalocyanine dyes, which are insoluble in solvents and have good dispersion in the ink. It has strong adhesion to the film-forming agent, so it does not penetrate into the inside of the paper, and the color should be bright and weather-resistant.

5. Dispersant

Appropriate amount of dispersant can reduce the adhesion between ink and paper surface, so that the ink can be wiped off within a certain period of time when it is written on the paper surface, and the dispersant can also maintain the writing fluency and long-term stability of the ink. The substance used in this experiment is a mixture of phthalates and ethylene glycol esters prepared in a certain proportion.

6. Film former

The film-forming agent is an important part of the ink for erasable ballpoint pens. Its main function is to form a uniform film on the surface of the paper and serve as a carrier for dyes. It is required to have a certain adhesion to the paper, and it is not easy to peel off, but it can be gently wiped off with an eraser, has strong adhesion to colorants, has good solubility in solvents, and is mutually stable with other components, and can be stored for a long time. . Rubber film formers were used in this experiment.

7. Solvents

In the ink for erasable ballpoint pens, the function of the solvent is to dissolve dyes, film-forming agents, and to be compatible with various auxiliaries, to provide a certain fluidity, and to have just the right volatility, which can effectively control drying during the writing process. speed. Experiments show that the effect of using co-solvent is better than that of single solvent. In this experiment, the co-solvent system of solvent A:solvent B=1:1.5~2.5 is used, and the effect is the best.

8. Other additives

(1) Lubricants and corrosion inhibitors

Fatty acids are usually used as lubricants in the ink components, and the lubricants are also co-solvents. The functions of the lubricant include: A. Lubricate the ball and provide fluent writing; B. Prevent the ink from drying, so that the ballpoint pen has a stable and good initial performance. Pen performance; C. Increase the depth of dye dissolution and improve the color of the dye. The introduction of fatty acids is corrosive to some nib metals (such as copper alloys), causing a heterogeneous crystalline substance in the ink to block the channel, thus shortening the service life of the ballpoint pen. The method of using fatty acid supplemented by corrosion inhibitor can solve the corrosion problem and meet the lubrication requirements at the same time. The corrosion inhibitor used in the experiment is dissolved in fatty acid in a saturated state, which can achieve the purpose of anticorrosion.

(2) Antioxidant, anti-desiccant

Another cause of agglomerated blockages and crystal crowns in ballpoint pen inks is the oxidation of brass and the interface, and the production of copper and zinc compounds in the solution. Antioxidants contain substances that can absorb and absorb surrounding oxygen, so they can effectively prevent oxidation. The combination of antioxidants and corrosion inhibitors can more effectively prevent or inhibit the corrosion of copper alloys. Experiments show that the antioxidants we use are effective. good. In the experiment, we also used an anti-drying agent, whose main function is to prevent the oxidative drying of the ink surface or ink traces, so that the ink and ink traces have better visual effects, and at the same time prolong their service life and retention period, and can also improve the ballpoint pen during application. performance, anti-desiccant is also an antioxidant.
